NFL Betting in Michigan
Michigan came within a stone’s throw of legalizing online sports betting in 2018 and proponents are confident they will be able to get it legalized in 2019. The bill to legalize sports betting passed overwhelmingly in the state legislature before the outgoing governor issued a surprise veto. With a new governor on board and very high support for legalization among state lawmakers, it appears only a matter of time until Michigan joins states that have already legalized sports betting, like New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
Michigan’s foray into trying to legalize NFL betting comes after the Supreme Court lifted a decades-long ban on sports betting outside of Nevada, paving the way for states to set their own rules. The bill once again under consideration in the state legislature would allow the state’s existing casinos to set up online sports books. The bill would allow anyone over 21 to bet, as long as they are located inside the state at the time.
For those itching to get their NFL betting fix as soon as the law is passed, here is a quick primer on NFL betting and where you will be able to wager on Detroit Lions games.
How Do NFL Odds Work?
NFL odds are generally broken down into favorites and underdogs. You can bet using a point spread, which provides incentive to bet on the underdog because the favorite has to win by a certain margin to “cover” the spread and cash in, or using a moneyline, where a dollar value determines how much cash you can win depending on how likely the pick is to win the game outright.
Point spreads are the most common bet types and each game will list a point spread indicated by a minus sign next to the favorite. So if the Lions are a -4 favorite, they would have to win by at least 5 points for your bet to cash in, while a 4-point win would get your money back and a 3-point win or less would be a loss. If the Lions are a +6 underdog, they can lose by as much as 5 points for your bet to cash in.
Moneylines indicate the ratio of the possible win to your initial stake. So if the Lions are a -110 favorite, you would need to bet $110 to win $100. If they are a +130 underdog, your $100 bet would win you $130.
You can also bet on whether the final combined score will be “over” or “under” the projected point total set by each sportsbook.
Betting on Detroit Lions Games?
The best way to amp up the excitement on a cold December afternoon of Lions football is to put some action on the game, especially during seasons when Matt Stafford & Co. are not quite living up to expectations. Despite going 6-10 in 2018, the Lions were a solid NFL betting pick throughout the season, going 9-7 against the spread.
Once Michigan legalizes NFL betting, the bill currently under consideration would allow wagers on any professional or amateur sport within three months of the bill being approved, though it may take up to another year for licenses and regulations to be finalized. In betting terms, however, Michigan is the odds-on favorite to become the next state to legalize sports betting.
